The Center for Educational Leadership (CEL) is launching the Instructional Leadership Academy, a yearlong professional development program that CEL delivers directly within a school district. Through the academy, a school district’s principals, instructional coaches, teacher leaders, and central office leaders become stronger and more effective instructional leaders.
Based on the CEL-led Florida Commissioner's Leadership Academy, the in-district leadership and learning community has received positive reviews from participants and is now available nationwide. “I have been in education 24 years, and this is probably the best PD I have ever done. It’s not just another professional development that you go to ... I really believe in this program,” said Lori Duckstein, a principal with the Hendry County District Schools.
The Instructional Leadership Academy uses a cohort model that combines whole-group and small-group job-embedded learning. Through institutes and learning walkthroughs, educational leaders in a school system develop a common language and shared vision for high-quality instruction, learn nonjudgmental methods for observing and analyzing instruction, and acquire transformative skills in providing targeted feedback and planning professional development. Coupled with CEL's Measures of Instructional Leadership Expertise (MILE) assessment and an innovative micro-credential certification process, the Academy grows instructional leadership practice throughout an entire district.
The Academy draws on CEL's more than 15 years of experience in bringing effective, research-based instructional leadership professional development to educators around the country. Currently, CEL's Academy curriculum is being implemented in 50 high-need schools in a large-scale principal professional development study funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.
